There are times in your life when playing crickt becomes a matter of playing for the benefit of the game rather than just trying to win the game. Writing this sound like an excuse for playing shit! This is not really the case

Four teams turned up to play today at the Lima Cricket & Football Club (LCFC), Chak De, Eidegenossen, Kiteflyers and LCFC themselves. Order of play was as follows:

This is a six a side tournament which if you watch as an innocent bystander seems like a complicated kids game but as an adult is a great version of cricket. As a batsman should you puncture the fielding team you are almost guaranteed a four or a six, a mishit a one or a two. As a bowler your aim is to minimize the damage to your team.

First game up and LCFC put on 47 for their five overs. Soulsby putting on the majority of the runs. In response KFC chased down the score with two balls to spare. The report does not really do damage to game and though the game should have been won easily it was not till Ed smacked a six from the penultimate ball did the game end. LCFC fought but to no avail. (Hodgy dodgey fielding....)

Eids dismantled Chak De fairly easily in the second game. Nick Jones smacking the ball all over the park. Chak De doing little.

When Eids played LCFC a score of 52 by LCFC was deemed another slightly below par score and so it proved with both Mike Soulsby and Rob Champion’s overs both going for 20. Nick Jones and Ian Roughton chased down the score with apparent ridiculous ease. The game finished in under 3 overs. LCFC discovered a new abyss…..

The penultimate game of the round robin was between Chak De and LCFC which proved to be humdinger of a game. LCFC scored with MS RC and CS all adding runs with a late rally from JW and JP to bring the score to 44. Not quite enough. Tony went for 15 in his over, JW took 2 wickets and pulled the score back to par. CS took a wicket but was pricey. MS bowled excellently for his over leaving 12 needed off the last over. A couple of wides assisted Chak De and needing 4 off the last ball managed to squeeze it past Tony, slightly inconsolable, and gifting LCFC with the wooden spork…..

In a dress rehearsal of the final David Sharples and Kenny Steen managed to provide a rather dull interlude to the day and put on 30 odd for the loss of no wickets. These were chased down rather easily by Eids.

In the final Eids scored 67 and the Flyers only hopes were dashed in the first and second overs with Barsby being caught and bowled by Mahoney and Skipper Baxter being run out by the occasional Jack in the second over. KFC ended on 45 odd.

It is a shame that words can not really describe such a day with just shy of 30 people enjoying themselves enormously. To Eids the spoils of victory but to the other teams the feeling of belonging. Come next year, new games, new players, new batting, new fielding and new bowlers. Sixes is a kids game but played oh so enthusiastically by adults

LCFC Secure Clausura for Second year running

Sunday 10^th April saw Lima Cricket retain the Clausura tournament for the second year running. After having a somewhat disappointing opening half of the seasons when the batting guns had refused to fire, this was certainly not the case in the clausura.

In the first game LCFC managed to post 130 odd thanks to Tony Sanford hitting his maiden fifty against Eids who was ably assisted by Seb Navarro, who was finally getting some time out in the middle, largely due to circumspect batting and running between the wickets at the top of the order. In reply Eids were pretty much done in by not really having enough players availbale and were bowled out for 70 odd with Walter pitching in with 3 for 15 and miserly bowling from Grandjean and Sanford.

The second game can really be defined by one innings, Louis Grandjean hit 112 from not many balls to secure a scoreline of 204 to ensure that the Kiteflyers would not be able to repeat the painful defeat they had inflicted on LCFC earlier in the season. What was more remarkable about this is that at the 13^th Wicket the score was only 60 odd for 1. Ed Baxter was hit for 31 in one over, including 5 sixes. Nick Myers watched amiably on (44 not out) as Louis crashed 13 sixes aound the ground almost managing to land the ball in all the tennis courts. This is his personal goal for next season he says. In reply Flyers managed to reach 150 with E Baxter hitting a half century to make up for his bowling figures in LCFC’s Batting (UNPRINTABLE). Again the bowling was tight by LCFC and with regular wickets the unlikely scoreline was calmly defended. The Guns of Lima Cricket had really fired this time.

So last Sunday saw LCFC having to win the game outright against Chak De as Flyers had defeated Eids by nearly 100 runs due mainly again to Eids having squad selection availability problems this year. Barsby outhit Grandjean with a score of 120 with the flyers putting on another double tonne score. LCFC Skipper Walter sent an email out to all and sundry to make sure they voted early and be at the game on time (The skipper himself was nearly ordered to remain at the voting booth to assist but was able to run away crying "I have a cricket match to Captain!", Surprisingly this fell on deaf ears here in Lima.). With a full squad and welcoming Mike Soulsby back from his beach sojourn on the Riviera they call Asia here and also Jorge Pancorvo our redoubtable keeper who had been on wedding mission in the States LCFC were looking up for the fight. On losing the toss LCFC were put into the field and were up against it fairly quickly with a steady six an over being hit by the confident Chak De with Kash putting up the greatest fight. But LGJ quickly put a stop to that and the wickets began to tumble. Walter came on and bowled his miasmic nonsense and during his spell four wickets fell, which allowed the LCFC to feel confident about chasing the target of a gettable 124. Gordon Hodgson and Desmond Soulsby went out to sort. Gordon was soon gone holing out to Kash at Long off and LGJ was soon LBW to VV. But the resolute Soulsby (50odd not out) steadied the ship with Myers until another blip at the end of the innings and with 30 left to hit he and the skipper saw the team home with 4 balls to spare.

No doubt LCFC will be plundered by other teams this year with players being tapped up by unmentionable teams....

Thoughts on an issue earlier in the season

Estimado Presidente

En la fecha 24 de Enero 2011, un equipo de football de Mexico estaba practicando en la cancha de cricket, una parte del terreno en la que nos han prometido que nadie va jugar. Por suerte yo estaba viendo y honestamente no podia creerlo. Casi 20 jugadores, con chimpunes, destruyendo exactamente el area donde es sumamente importante que no se maltrate. El senor Cesar Drago, el director de futbol, estaba presente y no hizo nada para evitarlo. Yo tuve que intervenir. Ni nosotros entramos a la cancha con zapatillas durante la semana, especialmente el dia despues de regar la cancha. Tengo que decir que por ciertas partes la cancha esta arruinada y estuvimos pensando practicar cricket este Domingo. Ya no va ser posible y vamos a tener que usar la cancha artificial otra vez.

Por otro lado no solamente es la cancha de cricket que esta en mala condición, sino tambien la cancha el de fútbol y de hockey estan muy maltradas. No crees que seria un buen momento para dejar de usar la cancha tanto, para que se pueda recuperar?

Honestamente estoy sorprendido y decepcionado por la falta de interes a largo plazo. Seria posible que podamos trabajar juntos por el bien comun?

Estimados:

Hoy en la mañana tuvimos entrenamiento con la categoría libre y en realidad el campo estaba igual a como estaba el Domingo o los días anteriores por lo que el término “destruyendo” me parece demasiado exagerado.

Por otro lado, dudo que césar tenga que ver con que el hecho de que este equipo mexicano haya ido a entrenar al Club por lo que me parece totalmente fuera de lugar ese comentario de que “no hizo nada para evitarlo” (es mas, dudo que alguien haya podido hacer algo al respecto ya que me imagino aquel equipo había coordinado el tema con anticipación).

Realmente me molesta un poco la actitud de este señor y su poca colaboración, sería bueno hacerle recordar que varias veces, en plena temporada de fútbol, se les permitió jugar Cricket cosa que nunca antes, en todos los años que voy al Club, recuerdo haya pasado.

En el caso del equipo Mexicano que fue a hacer ejercicios de soltura en el club, la decision fue tomada por mi. Si bien es cierto no se comunico en el comite fue porque desde fines de noviembre tuvimos varias solicitudes de diferentes equipos que vienen a Lima y que muchas veces la desicion es de un momento a otro como esta vez, que el pedido fue el Sabado en la tarde.

En cuanto a las afirmaciones del Sr. Walter de que se habian producido DESTROZOS en el club, son totalmente falsas, aparte los ejercicios hechos por los mexicanos ni siquiera tocaron la zona del cricket, esto nos indica que aveces algunos socios consideran que son dueños del club y aparte traen discordia dentro de nuestra institucion, citando a la persona textualmente en un parrafo dice: que por ciertas partes la CANCHA ESTA ARRUINADA y estuvimos pensando practicar cricket este Domingo y no va a poder ser.......... considero que estas afirmaciones son falsas y lo pueden comprobar ustedes mismos caminando por la cancha.

El sr. Walter tambien se ha olvidado que en epoca de futbol se le presto la cancha para jugar cricket, en diferentes oportunidades una de las cuales fue para festejar el cumpleaños de su hermano, aqui se le demuestra que podemos trabajar juntos por el bien comun, sin pensar que cada uno es dueño del club y de la verdad.

Tanbien me entere que el señor Walter se acerco a gritarles a los mexicanos, dañando la imagen del club y los directivos, puesto que si estaban los mexicanos ahi es porque se les dio el pase, en cuanto al Sr. Cesar Drago no tiene responsabilidad alguna sobre lo ocurrido ya que la decision fue mia y gracias a el la cancha a llegado a la fecha en buenas condiciones por traer un ingeniero que apoyo en el mantenimiento de la misma.

Tambien les recuerdo que el Sr. Walter para pedir la cancha de futbol para el cricket se dirigio a Cesar Drago y no se convoco a ninguna reunion de comite para su aprobacion, fue tambien decision mia y tambien hubo quejas de los futbolistas pero supieron entender.

Tambien quiero recordar que el señor Walter fue invitado a tres reuniones con los capitanes de deportes en la cual al parecer solo se entero de una afirmando su asistencia a la cual hasta ahora lo estamos esperando.

Considerando de que nuestro club se llama Lima Cricket and Football Club y respetando nuestro nombre y la tradicion deportiva del club, consideramos el tiempo de tres meses que se le otorga a este deporte, teniendo presente que la mayoria de los que forman los equipos de cricket no son socios del club.

Estas visitas de equipos extranjeros son muy beneficiosas para la imagen del club y para el contacto de nuestros niños deportistas, ya que estan en contacto con profecionales de diferentes diciplinas de nivel internacional y si observaron el nombre del Cricket estuvo en todos los canales y periodicos.

Por favor Mabel convoca al Sr. walter a una cita el Sabado a las 11.00 am por confirmar y adjuntale este correo. Saludos cordiales, Eduardo Borobio.

Defence of complaint:

Was quietly reading at home

Noticed football being played near green, saw it was directly on the wicket. Went immediately to do ask what was happening. No one seemed to know, so felt I had to act sooner rather than later. I yelled at them to leave the wicket. They did and were very well behaved in the manner.

The reason you may not see many marks now is because I went round the wicket and pushed the turf marks up where they had dug up the ground.

My question is this? Why were the groundsmen told not to mark off the square which is something that is always done when the cricket pitch is being prepared?

Why did the football players set up exactly where the square is? I don’t believe it was deliberate but I do think it was thoughtless. This should not have happened and would not have happened if the square should have been cordoned off. This simple action could have avoided all the trouble it has created.

I think it is unacceptable to start talking about past events, which in the case of letting people play cricket during the football season, as a sign of good will has nothing to do with an action that has led to yet more bitter feelings between sporting clubs.

You can see the pitch is not ready for playing on now, look at how deep the lines are from football. It wasn’t my brothers birthday, it was his farewell, he has left Peru after 18 years here. If it was Eduardo’s responsibility why did he not respect the wishes of other sports in the club? This seems a little one eyed in respect to a sports director. Should not all sports be considered?

Apologies for not making the meetings, don’t see how this effects my complaint.

How many people who play football are members of the club? With respect I have always encouraged team players to join, and yet again what does this have to do with my complaint.

These prestigious visits by other foreign teams do good for the club I agree, but don’t you think other people should be informed of the happenings. This generally leads to more effective communication and less likely to lead to things happening like they did on Monday.

I aplogise if I come across strongly with my complaint, but if noone says anything how will we be able to get things done.

With regards to transparency, I have later found out that Gianfranco Danessi wrote an email on which yours Eduardo borrows much information. Which rather surprisingly I was excluded from. Is it not important to have mark rosevere transparency in this club? Also with this second email which is a personal attack on cricket and not at an action why does he not send this email to me? Seems strange.

Should something like this, which we have known about since November not be actioned better?

This is simply not true, yes parts are destroyed we can go and look at the pitch now, I have photos to show this.

I asked the mexicans to remove themselves from the wicket.

If I am bringing discord to the club and think I am an owner then what do you think you are doing here?

Peruvian National Legue Apertura Week One, AKA the Peasouper

Last Sunday 13^th February 2011 saw the recommencement of the Peruvian National League. In this early season league, called the Apertura the four main teams battle out over three weekends for the Chimu Holidays Trophy. LCFC were playing Eidegenossen to defend their unbeaten run in all the league games last year. As usual the game did not start as planned but half an hour late and was quite stopstarty as the ball kept getting lost in the bushes after Clint Donkin kept depositing it there off some pretty wayward bowling by the Eids. Incidentally LCFC had won the toss and decided to bat first. Hodgy was out with the score on 22 so new boys Donkin and Grandjean, both hit about 70 odd, don’t have the stats to hand)set about the bowling, putting on a stand of 140 odd taking the score to 170 when disaster struck. Clint was stumped by the Eids wickey off John Bell’s slow slow bowling. Good technique to use on this pitch with the ball practically stopping when it pitches. Hans was out immediately next ball for a Golden being bowled off another incredibly slow ball. It literally stopped on top of the stumps. Walter was then runout in comical fashion and Champion was yet another victim to Bell’s slow Boa Constrictor like bowling. John Bell must be mentioned in despathces for his bowling , showing the majority of other bowlers how important accuracy is. LCFC scrambled to 180. An adequate score.

In response Eids were none for two in the first over with Hans dismissing the openers very cheaply, bringing Gary ‘workaholic’ Sargent to the crease with Revolving Door Mahoney. Chris has switched teams more times than Nicolas Anelka, good thing he is a jolly nice bloke! Both batsmen were making fairly good headway in the chase which required at least two boundaries an over until Gary holed out to Donkin off Sanfords bowling. Then the pivotal moment of the innings came and it belonged to LCFC’s youngest player Sebastian. Sebastian failed to grab hold of a catch by Ravi but the batsmen decided on a suicidal single. Seb quickly picked up and flung in to Jorge who ran out Mahoney with some aplomb, who it has to be said was the danger batsman for the Fellowship team. Nick the new English teacher from Cambridge then tried to give Eids some credit batting with Ravi until Ravi was stumped by Jorge again off Walter’s bowling. And although Eids managed to only lose by ten runs due to some pretty wayward bowling in the back ten by LCFC the result was never really in doubt. Hans and Louis came back at the end to shore up the runs. Tony was the pick of the bowling for LCFC, bowling neatly taking a couple of wickets and not giving too much up in way of boundaries. A satisfactory but slightly untidy result for LCFC. Kiteflyers next weekend.. Below is the match report for the second match as provided by the exLCFC player Ed Baxter, now skipper of Kiteflyers. Interestingly two of the three players to leave LCFC last year are now captaining their respective teams. And Derek Jones has gone onto Head a school in Doha. Make of that what you will.

An ominous wisp of fog blowing across Lima Cricket Club on Sunday preceded the much anticipated Kiteflyers vs. Chak De Cricket extravaganza which was to bear witness to one of the best team batting performances (or worst bowling performances) the 20-20 tournaments have seen. It was a game that was played in good spirits and was notable for a number of debuts and enthusiasm on both sides.

2 o’clock, the proposed starting time came and Chak De were ready in their whites sat in a beautiful team building circle with Vish in a ridiculously good mood as always (always a bad sign for the opposition) and cackling away over the 3 different batting orders they had. As for the Kiteflyers team 4 of us were there, with one standing around in pants not sure whether to actually bother getting changed or not in case the rest of the team didn’t turn up. As it turns out they were in the bar and shuffled over for the eventual 2:30 start.

Manfully taking to the field with 10 players, (I bet you can guess who didn’t show up), the Kiteflyers first over went for about 8 runs. As it turns out that was probably the lowest scoring over of the innings as Chak De piled on the runs amassing a ridiculous 248 for about 6 off their 20 overs. It was however strangely enough, a reasonably enjoyable experience for most of the Kiteflyers many of whom got a chance to bowl. There were some great batting performances, top scorer was Suresh I think with around 50 and lots of other players chipped in here and there. Particularly memorable was the 3 fours he hit in a row of one utterly rubbish Baxter over. E. Xtra got his top score of all time I would imagine too.

Jimmy on his debut deserves a mention as he got 2 wickets in his one over of er, 12 balls I think. One of the balls was so cr@p however it wasn’t even allowed to be called a wide. Anyway he should be congratulated for getting Vish out on his full debut. In other comedy moments Dave Sharples bowled the best ball of the day (a dot), fell over and then turned to be relieved that his girlfriend and dad were still having lunch by the swimming pool.

The mist continued to roll in and the Kiteflyers took some great catches and strangely for the score actually fielded quite well. Gerhard must be mentioned for the fine catch he took near the start of the innings.

After a quick turnaround Abbott and Nick were sent in to chase the small matter of 12.4 runs an over. They started pretty well hitting a couple of lusty blows for four but then Chak De started to turn the screw, bringing an LBW appeal straight off the middle of Abbott’s bat. Needless to say that went down well with the batsman and wickets began to fall. Nick somehow hit the ball behind him to be caught by Kash and the batting order began to disintegrate. Lovely shots included a meaty six by Gav over mid-off and a Dave Sharples four courtesy of Anish’s foot (or knee) which was actually 20m from the boundary at point of contact.

Some good blocking by the lower order kept Chak De at bay until the 14^th over and the Kiteflyers were eventually all out for around 80. After the last shrieking huddle of the day by Chak De it was time to retire to the bar and strangely enough the mist by now had begun to recede...

Dear All

As you are probably or should be aware of the Apertura Season begins this weekend. This is the first time for us to have really competitive cricket this season. If you haven't played yet then it might be a good idea to get down to the Marvesa Cathedral Cricket Net of Love at the LCFC this Friday before the games begin in earnest on Sunday. Nets start at 5pm. Arrive early to avoid disappointment.

2:00pm: Chak De v Kite Fliers

Please arrive early to avoid the wrath of your skippers.

Well this was definitely a day of cricket. Cricket Peru decided that a new format should be tried. We would play a 20/20 test match in which both teams would play two innings of 20 overs a la test match. In reality it turned into a 20/20, 15./15 over match because in Lima nothing ever starts on time. When one wants someone to turn up on time here you have to be forceful in the way you say to people: ‘Hora Inglesa’…. English Time. For some reason timekeeping is not a strong point amongst the locals. This habit is passed fairly seamlessly onto expats and the end result is that foreigners seem to not only accept this tardiness but also manage to be generally later than most Peruvians. By the time everyone arrived and the game was ready to start it was 12:30pm which meant we were already thirty minutes behind schedule. After Gary and Julian managed to sort the teams out in which Vish (current superstar) had been swapped for two good players it was decided we should play a 12 a side game, which is brilliant because many more players are getting a game than normally do. The rules of this game are fairly straightforward in that after both teams bat once and with the next innings they reverse the batting order with the opening bowlers not being allowed to bowl in the second innings until the third change. The net result is that everyone gets a good chance to bat in the match, where normally the tail is ignored and shifted around the field like grazing cattle.
So with Walter winning the toss and deciding to bat Kash and Bobby, who were both playing their first games for the season, hit the ball to all corners of the park and were rather generously allowed to make hay with roughly four catches being put down on the boundary. Gazza at this point was still able to remain cool. The openers put on a respectable partnership of 55 until bobby was out for 2odd Louis GJ was next in and scored rapidly until he was caught of Vish for 52 Kash made an unbeaten 50
(retired) The run rate then dropped dramatically with Rob Champion picking up 3 wickets with wickedly ordinary bowling including the scribes for toe ending a shot a metre wide outside off stump and being picked off by John Bell at point. Julians team managed to put on a respectable score of 143 in the first innings. A defendable score but not amazing.
In response the fielding team started excellently with Umesh removing Abbott for not very many and Vishy also. Champion and Sonnu then laid waste to the bowling with a particularly good partnership of 112, undoubtedly the best of the day. Rob made a chanceless unbeaten 50 (retired) which is a first for him, not the half century but the chancelessness aspect. Sonnu would probably have also had to retire after making his maiden fifty but was out on 47 when his skipper told him his score. Always a kiss of death for this ilk of batsman! Out next ball. Sonnu's innings was not quite as errorfree but Sonnu's golf slap to leg is a mastery in coordination. Gary and John Bell then took the score to 160, 18 ahead of Julian’s team.
Second innings: Gazza’s team won the pissing rights in the first match by beating Julian’s team in 17.5 overs.
Eight minutes later and Owen and Gerhard were opening the batting both on batting debut. The innings started fairly tamely with both openers showing commitment can overcome technique and after 4 overs were 20 odd for none. Chris Mahoney and Kumlesh then came in and both scored half centuries. In one over Mahoney showed excellent eye and pelted Gazz for three sixes. Champion managed to make the scribe his bitch by having him caught behind by Biese for 1. But Julian’s team had stated their claim. Gazza’z team needed 120 to win the game outright off 15 overs. So Tony and Peter came in with Peter not lasting long. Gareth and Tony then set about chasing down the score. Julian’s team were doing their best to make this a realistic possibility especially with some weak fielding and bowling. It was not until Kash and Louis came on did the run rate start becoming difficult for the opposition. Eventually the task became too hard and Gazza had a bit of a tizzy with Anish the wicket keeper who was becoming more vociferous with every over. He was not happy with Anish’s enthusiams. Eventually with the time at 6:20 and the light more than a minor issue Gazza’s team ended up 11 short of the target.
In summary 70 overs were bowled four players scored high forties or fifties. Everyone got a chance to have a decent bat. Tony 38. Owen and Gerhard putting on useful runs and Umesh bowling excellently in the first innings. Late comers Kamlesh and Peter were given a game. Champion achieved a personal best by being both top run scorer (57 not out) and wicket taker (fourfor) in one match. Gazza won the first game which was the most important game if you look at it from a 20/20 perspective but Julian’s team held out and managed to win the two innings games. Both skippers had felt that this was a pretty difficult game to skipper with amount of different tasks to be dealt with. 550 runs were put on the board, at an average of around 8 an over. 11 runs was the difference and Vishy had a hangover!

Sunday 30th January 2011: Viv Ash Cuba Libre Memorial Match Report

Hope you all enjoyed last weekend. One one sided game followed by a far better game, runs finally being scored and Vishy not destroying the first innings batting order again (in the second match that is). Hats off to Vishy through great nagging accurate bowling a lesson to all and sundry but much aided by wayward and abject batting, sorry if I offend anyone here. Another Hat trick for Vish, two in two weekends. Is this some kind of record? Should we be submitting this to Wisden? Nuk Fitzpatrick also showed promise with the ball. Viv's team scored 53 runs, Tom Jolly and Chris Mahoney the only ones I think who can hold their heads up proffering some defence, though that man/machine Vish swooped to illustrate why he is also a premier fielder in Lima to snatch Mahones cm's off the turf. In response, Louis RunMachine Grandjean showed why he is a promising new signing for the 20/20's ahead, battering everyone, assisted by Matt Terminator O'Connor who was able to partner Louis admirably. Skipper Gav Breeze, whose birthday we celebrated, also came in and assisted in the 9 wicket debacle.

A Second match was rapidly scheduled by the skippers with Viv suggesting to Vish he should sit out the match as this would balance the affair! This rebellion was quietly and quickly quashed and Vish was then handed over to Viv's team like the Black Prince's favourite horse lent to appease the Dauphin in the 100 Years War. It was a better game overall, Vish took wickets again though not as many this time. Gazza was on target this time and quickly swept through a rather brittle lower order with 3 or 4 for not many, until Sonnu and Walter came together and put on 40odd runs and with Saffer Sanford the score was lifted to 117. In response Nick Barsby proved he like smiting the ball lustily, people were whispering on the boundary "ooooh he's a lusty swiper!". He hit a quickfire 37, quickly followed by Kamlesh who's stonemason blows carried the game on until he was caught behind by Gav off Louis GJ's bowling. Hodgson played a great holding innings (36*) he and Gazza wrapped up the match with two overs to go, but not before this happened....... (imagine you are watching A Question of Sport)

" 40 odd needed off 5 overs, 2 down,Tony bowls a good off break Gazza slashed it to point where Mahoney dropped it, batsman ran 1 and then two overthrows, then it went back to the keeper again flew past him the back up fielderS, Chandon and Walter on the square leg boundary trying to be cute with a one handed pickup, bobbled past him over the line for four more overthrows. Dropped catch, overthrows, 7 runs one ball, bad moods, lost game....."

A lesson to all of us.....All in all cricket was the winner and everyone enjoyed themselves, except maybe the recipients of Vishy's vicious bowling!

Onwards and Upwards. Last week, in response to Chris Hodgon's email last week only 10 people confirmed, and 26 people turned up. Though it's great to have such a good response, it does make organizing things a fair bit trickier and makes it harder to give everyone a game. Please let me know if you can play.

It would be marvellous to submit the teamlist back to you on Saturday. PLEASE NOTE THE EARLIER START. We tried this last year with great success in the first official Ashes in Peru match, forgot who won, but it was a great match. One of the quirky rules is that batting orders are to be reversed and the opening bowlers aren't allowed to open both matches, they can come in third change.

If I don't hear from Jorge, would anyone else be interested in Skippering?

Christmas Cricket Charity Match December 12th 2010

For the last Cricket Sunday of 2010 we decided to play the Christmas Cricket Charity Match with a fining system in place for all manner of mistakes and conditions. Everyone would have to pay a minimum fine of 10 soles and if the worse came to worse then 50 soles would be the salary cap. Obviously turning up late was a fine and this was something practically everyone did. Peru is not a country known for its punctuality. When you want people to arrive on time you have to insist ‘Hora Inglesa’ (English time). I don’t ever remember arriving late for a match whereas in England this would often be the case. Reasons given for lateness ranged from didn’t think it would happen to this classic text massage: “sorry I didn’t come today . Was drinking till 10am woke up thinking it was 11 but it was 4!” Not sure who its from but we can guess its either a Kiteflyer or a LCFC player or both!

The reason the game almost didn’t happen is because a cricket club who shall remain nameless in the South of Peru near the Chilean border didn’t send us the mat back in time. Had it not been for the sage words of the LCFC Hockey coach Paul Carera

“Ah don’t worry Julian we used to play all the time like that before we had a mat” the match may never have taken place.

So it was with some trepidation we spoilt modern mollycoddled Peruvian International Squad cricketers approached this Leviathan of a Lima Cricket Wicket. One has to understand that footballing thugs had been running over it just 24 hours hence. And the groundskeeper had only cut and rolled the wicket that morning. The Football pitch halfway line cut across the wicket as a quasi-marker for a just short of a good length ball. Apart from the occasional shooters the pitch was remarkably true and did assist seamers and left arm spin but apparently not offbreaks. Much more exciting than these dull Test wickets prepared in the Southern Continent. Its no wonder Test Cricket is dying. They should come and play at LCFC.

So we decided to call the teams Leslie and Deborah for no other reasons that these were the first two words to emerge from the skippers mouths when thinking of names for teams. Leslie is also the name of my wife’s favorite pet dog, so she was chuffed too, my wife not the dog because the poor thing passed away a couple of years ago. Anyway lest we digress. So Kash paid the first offical fine by being the toss losing skipper. Tim Nichols the other skipper decided to bat and he and Suresh galloped off to a useful start putting on around 70 for the first wicket with Suresh playing the support role to the master biffplay of Nichols. Tim is leaving at Christmas and it has to be said his absence will be missed. In the short time he has been a Lima Cricketer he has fast become everyone’s favorite and generally number one or two on any team list. Ed then batted and got yet another snorter. How many snorters has Ed got this year? Simply amazing, always impossible balls getting him out. They must follow him about like flies to cowpats.

Walter J in, playing fine timing himself in nice cut for four then a tickle of his legs for another boundary then a ball that just went straight through the gate as if Farmer Giles had forgotten to close it. Tim then retired (67 not out)with the score on 100 but there was enough time for Tony Saffer Sanford (27 not out) to smack Walter S for three consecutive fours (nice). Jorge Pancorovo got an absolute Jaffer from Simon Walter (fined for over celebrating) who was playing his final match before going to join the Washington Cricket League as their overseas player for the 2011 season. Apparently he answered an ad to Wanted Desperately Seeking Mud pie Slinger. He couldn’t resist it, and neither could his family. He will also be sorely missed, being one of the stalwart members of both the Peruvian National squad and Eidegennossen for the last 14 years. Only two other players can claim to greater longevity to Lima Cricket than him, Harry and Hans. So out with the old and in with the new. Sebastian a star of the future, a young Peruvian lad of 15 who learned to play last year, came onto play and managed to successfully score a few runs.

Deborah were set a gettable 143 as there were a few holes in the field due to it being an 8 a side game. Ed Baxter and Tim Nichols opened the bowling and basically fed Chris Hodgson and Miles Buesst a series of hittable longhops and not much else. Tony came on and Miles flashed his pink handle at another short ball which Suresh held firmly(the ball not the pink handle). Luis Grandjean came into bat. Louis is a new recruit to LCFC after he was persuaded to join us from London Universites (and if you believe that then …….) now we have lost Ed Baxter to the wily Kiteflyers. Apparently he wants to add Cricket skipper to his CV. Again out with the old and in with the new. Louis batted safely and serenely. Chris Hodgson (inte 40’s – fined) holed out to one longhop too many off Suresh and Walter J managed to extricate Kash with a sharp caught behind by Jorge who like Hodgy in the previous innings was keeping with a baseball glove (fined) as all the kit is wisely being kept in Harry’s office. But it did look like curtains for Leslie when Tim after bowling an over of old nails passed the ball to Walter J with just 9 required off two overs, and yes this was the moment of the Christmas Miracle! Julian bowled his usual wide for the over , Miles began his usual sledging of the bowler, but then next ball it happened, just there, with a ball that did oh so little as Louis holed out on 52 (half century on Dayboooo!)to Tim Hippo Hands Nichols; two balls later Dave Hatchett was stumped due to a rather thickly drawn line by the grounds man; then the final wicket was Peter Biese bowled behind his legs as he tried to avoid the ball by bending his knees. He later confessed that he had been hit earlier on the thigh and was afraid it might hit the same place……. J Walter 4 Overs, 4 for 16 PB.

Next over Tom Jolly was caught by Tony off Ed’s bowling, giving Leslie a quite remarkable victory. Simon was the Not Out Batsman, improving on the double duck he received last weekend. 39 overs and two balls were bowled. 282 runs were scored, 16 players batted and all could have won the match, 8 bowlers bowled and 7 Swans went swimming. We retired to the bar with a case of beer and 590 soles was raised for homeless children after all the different fines were totted up. Juliet Solomon and her father ably assisted in the fining. A wonderful way for Cricket Peru to end another remarkable year. first ever Cricket Peru interprovincial games and first ever Cricket Peru two tier League.

Tacna Tour 2010

As the Lima Llamas girded their loins for the rigours of high-performance cricket against the Tacna Tigers realization dawned that this would probably be the first time inter-provincial cricket had ever been played in Peru outside of Lima. The venue was Tacna on Peru’s southern border with Chile, a place that has been at the centre of many a dispute between the two countries, usually with Peru coming off second best.

Tacna is known by most expats in Peru as the place you go to get your tourist visa extended by crossing the border into Chile and then coming back again. It is known by most Limeños for the Zona Franca (Duty free Zone), where you can buy second-hand cars from Japan at knock-down prices. The snag is that the steering wheel has to be moved from right to left, making it a nightmare to work out which way your indicators actually indicate or how on earth the electric window works, assuming you can find the button.

Tacna is also a popular destination for Chilean cosmetic tourists: 6,000 a weekend at the last count. In fact Peru is well known as the place for excellent dentistry at bargain-basement prices. We cricketers knew it as a place where there are a few Pakistani who are handy with bat and ball, mostly employed in the second-hand car industry (see above), and have been coming to play against us with their Indian cohorts every year since records officially began 12 years ago.

This, as noted above, was the first time cricket has officially been played in Peru outside of Lima unless, of course, there is anything in the rumour that Hiram Bingham and his crew squared off against a Cusco XI at Sacsayhuaman nearly 100 years ago, before going to complete the comparatively unremarkable feat of discovering Macchu Picchu. However, there are no reliable records confirming Bingham as a cricketer. So it was with not a little excitement that the merry crew of ‘Projectile’ Miles (our skipper), ‘Tour Manager’ Hodgy, ‘Devon’ Champion, Chile’s Peter, ‘Saffer’ Tony (with wife and kids in tow), ‘Napoleon’ Walter, ‘Master’ Sergio, Harry Hildebrand (Cricket Peru President), ‘Trini’ Jules (our scorer), Timmy-Boy, Viscount Vishal, ‘Rolling Stone’ Spencer and ‘Have a go’ Hiro headed down south. Not since Fawcett’s 1898 expedition to the Amazon had such a motley band of brothers headed off into the unknown with such an unusual assortment of skills tucked into their trousers

The recon party of Miles, Hodgy, Champs, Vishal and Spence established that, yes, the nightlife was indeed up to scratch, especially at a bar called Jethro’s. Enough said there, apart from the fact that our dear own skip forgot to press the ‘Eject from Jethro’s’ button early enough and suffered for it the next day as a result. Hiro preferred the homebrew he had sequestered from a local Tacna farmer earlier in the day. Walter and Nichols (‘Timmy Boy’) had made the amateurish error of arriving at 6:30 in the morning on the day of the first game. Having had no sleep and feeling awful, they joined the others on the bus to the Zona Franca where the Tape-Ball Test was to take place.

We arrived at the pitch (see pictures in album), which was more like car park than a pitch as such, and not a very oval-looking car park at that; more of a road really. But, to be fair, a wide road with yellow kerbs to indicate the long-on and long-off boundaries, as well as shrubby areas, complete with a resident sheep to keep the grass short, to the leg and off. Behind third man was a car park with endless rows of Corollas (Toyota taxis-in-waiting) poised to create more gridlock in Lima. Behind to leg was a warehouse. Various local rules had to be explained: anything into the Corollas was a dead ball and anything into the warehouse would be bowled again also. Yellow kerb and over was a 6 and an imaginary line to the mid-off and midwicket areas made up the remaining boundaries. The Tacnites (not to be confused with the Tacnashites) had parked their high-rolling Mitsubishis and Nissans in that menacing Essex-boy fashion, which meant if the ball went that way it would be quite annoying to retrieve the ball from under the car. There was no LBW (that confused a fair number of us at first), which made it good policy to stand squarely in front of your stumps at all times. No Leg byes either. The wickets closely resembled my old school radiators, which you would touch in the madly optimistic hope that they were actually on during the coldest winter nights. They were also at least 50% wider than normal wickets. Innings were eight overs with bowlers permitted up to two overs each. The wicket offered little for our spinners to work with and the tape ball moved rather predictably, neither swinging nor dipping. The wicket also had a ridiculous camber which provoked much discussion amongst the Limeños as to where the ball should be pitched (pre or post camber?).

On to the action. We were informed that an average score was 90 to 100 runs off eight overs. Tacna got off to a flyer largely thanks to XXXXXX. He came into face Saffer Tony who was feeling pretty good about the world, having bowled a dot ball and claimed his first scalp, respectively, with his first two deliveries. The next four balls were 6, 6, 6 and 6, in that order. After managing to contain them to 110 odd, we scratched about with bats akin to the ones Matthew Hayden is making popular in the IPL. Distant relatives several time removed of oars would be a more apt term. Miles our regal skip made a golden and promptly went and chucked up in a bush. Tim got something whose chemical sign is Ag and goes quack. We were rubbish. In fact we were really rubbish in all three games and were literally taken apart by a team who knew their road better than they knew the insides of their palms! Their only hiccough came in the final match when we had managed score 68 odd and then had them at 2 for 3 after Vishy had dismissed what was probably their batting order in reverse except for the player who had skinned Tony in the first match and whose foot had finally failed to stop the ball hitting the stumps. However, after a bit more projectile vomiting from Miles, the Hulk arrived and promptly smacked us all over the [car]park (yours truly’s over went for 20 odd) allowing Tacna to consolidate their third win. Tim Nicholls should also be mentioned in dispatches for making 24 and 40 odd in thongs...

You might think that Lima would be dejected but no, we were joyous for a number of reasons: first, Hiro had scored some beers, though strangely Miles was not imbibing; second, we were playing cricket outside of Lima for the first time; and, third, we were away from Lima where the grey and damp rather gets to you after a while. The combination of these three factors meant we were as happy as pigs in the proverbial. The oppo on the other hand seemed a bit miffed we weren’t the least bit put out by the shellacking we had just received. Ah, it was all about the camber and, as Hodgy said, “This was no place for sheep.”

Options afterwards were a massage, medicinal pisco sours, or a kip before dinner at one of our gracious hosts’ houses. 10% opted for the massage, 30% for pisco, 30% kip, and the other 20% still hadn’t arrived from Lima. Despite Tacna’s evening nip in the air dinner was a delicious chicken and salad. And afterwards it was back to Jethro’s to see if we could locate Vishy’s camera that had oddly gone missing the night before. Jethro’s – Thank you for the Rolling Stones Beggars banquet record! Spencer turned into Eric the Viking that night. Harry and his one man Hoax Act did not go down a storm in Tacna.

Waking up to Tour Managers Hodgy’s hairy arse was not the most inspiring moment of the weekend but I did discover a perfect remedy for a hangover this weekend. Bottle of Inca Cola, Mixed Fruit Juice, Coffee, ham and eggs, dry toast and two ibuprofen. Works a treat. Off we went to the National stadium to the supposedly 2000 odd adoring fans, the mayor, the minister for sport and other local dignitaries. When we got there it was bloody hot and there were certainly not 2000 people but short of one of the big cricket playing nations are you ever going to get such a big crowd? In fairness there were about 300 fans that came to spectate at different times during the day. This included the players themselves.

After quite alot of dignitary glad handling such as special photos of both teams, teams together, teams apart, 25 different photos of the mayor with various members of both Lima and Tacna Communities, photos with team wags, photos with team mascots, we eventually went out to look at the mat that had been laid out in the middle of the pitch. Mattress companies would have been proud of the softness of the wicket. But heyho we were here in Tacna and playing cricket. This was the equivalent of the Nat West Final, or Gillette Final for those of us a little more nostalgic. Better get out there and do our best! A quick motivational speech from Miles, who had now recovered somewhat since the previous evenings shenanigans, and has finally turned his losing toss streak around (3 wins out of 4), and after throwing the first ball to the mayor to hit we got underway. Chris and Harry opened and it was not pretty. Due to the slowness of the pitch our boys were not able to get in line and time the ball with the usual aplomb they achieve back home at the LCFC. Although in fairness our pitch can be as slow as this onewe were playing on. When the ball was hit in the outfield it rarely travelled along the ground further than ten yards, areal attack was very dicey as hitting the ball into the air required Bradmanesque like timing. So the net result most of our boys got out either giving catching practice to the ring of fielders around the bat or playing and missing. Viscount Vishal held us afloat. Prior to him coming in we were worrying about whether Tacna could actually finish us off in one over! Vishy managed to score 32 valuable runs. I put 20 runs on with the Viscount before being dismissed in such a way it provided much mirth to those on the boundary. Let me describe it. My nemesis of yore, Javed, was bowling his dastardly leg spin and at this point I had been in for sometime, scratching around for 7 when I thought a lusty blow would be a good idea. The ball came down leg, or so I thought, but due to the variable bounce of the pitch it decided to roll the rest of the way to the wicket. I dived backwards, no not really dived, but fell backwards in the way a tree falls in a forest, in the hope that I could get my bat back into the crease before being stumped. The ball hit the wicket. Apparently if my bat had landed to the left or the right a bit it would have changed the trajectory of said ball and my wicket would have been saved. It still looked ridiculous.

After marching to 88 runs and a quick turnaround we managed to get a couple of breakthroughs but our score was never enough and they achieved the target in 20 odd overs. It was pretty disheartening because if we had managed to score another 40 odd runs we may have had enough to play with as it was such a difficult wicket. But that’s life and we’ll never know! Speeches followed, Harry avoided his Fidel Castro style overtures and once again thanked all the Tacnites for having us and hoping that this was the beginning of something great for Peru.

Chicken and Rice and exchange of shirts later we were on the minibus back to the centre of town to wait four hours until our flight back to Lima. These four hours were what tour is all about. With pisco sours in hand and exhausted after putting our bodies and minds through the ringer we dissected life. The conversation ranged from homeschooling to dentistry, to the qualities of the waitress (heart of gold but a face like a robbers dog), to the state of Hodgy’s hat and the christening of a new expression for having a quick one off the wirst (a hodgy), to the merits of having a hodgy on the plane or at Birmingham New street Station (the juries still out on that one), to the ethical principles of Spence removing the Rolling Stones record from the wall etc..... As you can read the level of conversation hit rock bottom fairly quick.

In summary what did we learn about going to Tacna? That we weren’t very good at playing tapeball in the Zona Franca. Miles, nor many of us are young men anymore and Cuba Libre’s and Beer don’t mix. Hodgy doesn’t need a clipboard. Spencer is a Berserker in disguise. Harry could be a stand up comedian if he wanted to be. Rob smiled for the whole weekend. Juliet was admirable in all she did. I am no longer Peter’s master. Tony did brilliantly with his entire family their. Tim Nichol and Vishy returned with their heads held up with pride to Lima. Sergio was a stalwart. We could have done with a few other better players. We didn’t practice enough. A great tradition has been started. They need a better pitch. We need to invent our own version of crazy cricket and thrash Tacna at it!

Cricket in Peru September October 2009

It’s been all go for Peru in what is normally a fallow time for the Peruvian Llamas. Firstly the Peru team has been in high-intensity training in preparation for the Americas Division III Championships. Captain Miles Buesst and Coach Blake Rutherford have been putting the team though an energetic training regime, in particular the concept of stretching (before and after practice) becoming an integral part of the match and practice buildup. The net result of this is that the team came home from the tournament fitter and with fewer injuries than in any previous tournaments. Thanks a lot Blake and Miles for that!

In the tournament itself, Peru did not quite perform as they would have liked to. Although it was noted that the team now have a more professional image than before they were let down mainly by the batting performances. In the first match Chile scored a massive 323, with Simon Shalders (195*) putting the Peru Bowling attack to the sword. Nadeem Ansari the only bowler contributing with 1 for 29 from ten overs. In response, the only real mettle came from Chris Abbott and Miles Buesst with 20 and 32 respectively. In the second match Peru skittled Belize for 160 with a phenomenal display of bowling and fielding. Paul Barnes, on debut, bowling with vim and vigor with figures of 1 for 29 from 10 and Tony Sanford mopping up with 4 for 38 from 5 overs. However disaster struck for Peru’s batsmen and the team was all out for a paltry 73, Peru’s lowest score in ICC internationals. In the final match versus Brazil (the eventual tournament winners), Peru almost managed to chase down 253, with Michael Soulsby making up for his previous demise with a maiden half century (57). Add Miles Buesst (36) and Nadeem’s fiery 29 from 14 deliveries and Peru came to within 17 runs of the target. This game was especially significant as the Amistad (Friendship) Cup was introduced for all games between Peru and Brazil (see foto).

There were many pluses to be taken from the tournament in that Peru fielded and bowled better than ever before, fewer catches were actually put down and fitness levels were up. However Peru were let down by their inability to build batting partnerships. Standards are definitely rising across the Americas division III.

Back to domestic issues, Lima now has a second permanent pitch at Cambridge school on which to practice on. John Bell, a Business Teacher was a key player in the negotiations with the school. This is some feat considering how difficult it has been for the PCA to have anything built in Lima. The pitch is true and is still flattening out, but it means that Cricket can now be played all year round, which is simply brilliant news. It may be used in the under-13 CSA tournament next April.

In November the Lima Cricket and Football Club, the oldest Cricket Club in South America, continues its 150^th celebrations with two cricket matches. On the 15^th November a forty over match will be played against the Ambassadors XI, bringing together the finest players in Lima and Peru. The match will be attended by local dignitaries and showcase the advances made in Peruvian Cricket in the last decade. The following weekend, 22^nd November, will be the inaugural Super South American Sixes competition to be played between Chak De, LCFC, Kiteflyers and Eidegenossen. It will be a family day for lots of people to come and watch, with a junior sixes game between Markham School and Hiram Bingham in the morning with a barbeque and opportunities for the younger players to learn from the ‘slightly’ older ones. All go in Peru!

It was like any other Sunday in Lima’s winter. Grey overcast and the humidity hanging like a damp sock. One big difference though. Lima now has a second cricket pitch. John, Ding Dong, Bell, Business and History teacher at Cambridge school has managed to coordinate the treacherous path that is school administrators, local municipalities, and aggregate suppliers. After attempts in various institutions, the PCA finally struck a rich seam at one of the Premier Anglo Peruano institutions, namely Cambridge School, on the Southside of Lima. It is hoped that a third schools cricket team will be created on the back of this initiative.

So the PCA turned up to try out the new facilities. Soon the familiar sounds of feet pounding in and the tock of bat on ball, cries of catch it, were all resounding in an unfamiliar part of Lima. The wicket plays true, it has to be said, constructed from, according to John differing layers of aggregate with a sandy base, layered with your finest Astroturf. The Eidegenossen Cricket Team now has a home. Highlights of the day: Miles ‘Strike Force One’ Buesst, smashing stumps into firewood at will, Chris Hodgson spicing up the Wicket Keepers look, and the phenomenal fielding drills the Red Hats were being put through by the latest Aussie Import Coach Blake Rutherford, plus all the other hivelike activities Peru are going through inorder to be ready for the impending South American Division III Championships.

Thanks has to be given to the ICC who have helped in the funding of this project, and all those different people at one point or another had to help out in design, supervision and construction.

Bloody Hell!
Its been a long time since I have bput anything up here on the blog.
Well guys we are getting ready for the Championships ahead, 7 more practices to go and the steam train that is the Peruvian Cricket Association is starting to look alot more intercity than it has in build ups to previous tournaments. Train Driver Miles is driving his carriages along as much as is humanly possible with this Home Guard but slowly and surely the ball is coming in harder, people have nearly forgotten what is playing across the line and Barnesy has admitted to British heritage, in fact of the squad Nine players have direct lineage to the Greatest of Britain, including Saffer Tone! Obviously this is after we have removed our red sashes and stopped singing 'Somos Libres Seamoslo Siempre.'
If I may be so bold to go through the squad pinpointing the strengths and skirting over the blemishes:

Miles 'Firing on all Cylinders' Buesst.

Right Hand Fast, Attacking Batsman, To say extremely useful all rounder would be to put it mildly. Miles is capable of fiery spells and is able to dominate the opposition with his clean hitting. Scored two centuries last season as well as a number of useful 50's while skippering the Kiteflyers. The new Captain of the Peruvian Red Caps will have something to prove and it will be great to see him drive Peru on to new heights.

Chris 'Goochie' Abbott
Ex-President PCA

Opening Bat. Wicket Keeper: Chris has been in the Peruvian squad since time immemorial. Around him have innings often been built. Always one to provide guiding advice with batting partners and also anyone in a bar later. Chris brings to mind the poem 'If' by Rudyard Kipling. Chris was instrumental in Peru joining the ICC and many other development plans.

Harry 'Crook' Hildebrand
President PCA

Opening/Middle order Bat. Occasional loopy nonsense. Harry like Chris has been with the Peruvian squad forever and is the most hospitable of hosts, infact everyone knows Harry. Ever heard that joke about Bob and the Pope? and the guy turns around and says 'dunno about you but who's that guy standing next to Bob?' Well that is Harry. A useful die hard batsman who is as hard to get out as a winkle on the Titanic. Harry provides positivity and optimism to the squad.

Hans 'Red Hot' De Witt

Middle Order Batsman, Medium Pace Bowler: Hans is an ever present in the squad as well. Hans is also the Fish Oil Man, what he doesn't know about fish oil isn't worth writing about. Hans our Dutch representative played county cricket in Holland before making his way over to Peru and has not lost his touch. A very useful batsman who has scored many useful knocks in the past. Looking to lose his Blackberry on the way to the ground in order to provide 150% concentration to the game in hand.

Nadeem Ahmed Ansari

One to watch: Nadeem, international man of mystery, is a fine striker of the ball and the most committed of players on the field of battle. Last tour was inconsolable after losing his wicket. Both a useful spin bowler and able to bowl at serious pace. Was Voted Most Valuable Player in Peru last season with searing knocks for Chak De, the eventual winners, in the 20/20 tournaments. Bound to have at least one great innings this tour.

Simon Walter

Right Hand Bat, Military Medium Swing Bowler. Simon has played for Peru for some time now, a useful batsman who has held the bottom order together on a number of occasions. His prowess in the field is well known with a laser like throw from the boundary, not one to push easy singles on. Husband to the lovely Karla and father to my nieces Camila and Luciana.

Tony Sanford

Right Hand Bat, Off Spin Bowler. Tony has bowled Peru into winning positions before, remember Brazil. Able to use his off spin as an aggressive weapon or stem the flow of runs at will. Tony is the resident Saffer in the squad bringing all the bristle that comes with it.

Mike Soulsby

Right Hand Bat, Medium Pace Bowler. Mike has been in Peru some years, plying his mangoes around the world. A reliable all rounder who plays with a straight bat. Plays very much in the manner of his mentor Chris Tavare but occasionally been known to play more attacking strokes. Should come good this tour.

Dinesh Lakmal Wijesinghe Ekanayake

Right Hand Bat, Medium Pace Bowler: Dinesh top scored for Peru in the last Championships, and after hitting a useful 50 against Chile last time around, was compiling a useful innings in the last match until he was injured. Known for his permanent smile and positive disposition as well as his ability to hit sixes.

Paul'Barnesy' Barnes

Right Hand Bat, Fast Right Hand Bowler: Paul, recently married, is a newcomer to the Peruvian squad. He is a strong clean hitter of the ball and is able to use his late swing to great effect. Expectations will be high with Paul this tournament in early innings breakthroughs.

John 'Ding, Dong' Bell

Right Hand Bat, Dobber of repute: John is well known for long innings and is difficult to dismiss once his eye is in. John is the Skipper of Eidegenossen and recently was responsible for the construction of Peru's second cricket wicket. Useful middle order batsman.

Chris Hodgson 'Green'

Right Hand Bat, Very Very Occasional Bowler: Chris, also recently married, is the opening bat for LCFC and has scored some useful knocks in the past. He is another newcomer to the squad and will be looking to impress this tournament. Reserve Coach.

Julian Walter

Right Hand Bat, Left Arm Spin: Scribe of the blog, also recently married to the Gorgeous Gladys Julian is known for forthright views on Cricket(generally wrong, thought that Bopara was the new Nasser....), Skipper of the LCFC, Has been known to bowl well, but very occasionally. He is a useful middle order batsman who can accelerate the scoring once his eye is in.

Sonnu

Right Hand Flayer, Malinga Like Bowler: Sonnu is also a newcomer to the squad, useful in the field and also with the bat once in. Looking to make his mark this tournament

Syed

A new face in the squad, Syed is also a batsman looking to make his mark on the team. A former prodigy of the cricket school of Rashid Latif, the one-time captain/wicket-keeper of the Pakistan national team, he is the driving force behind Cricket Peru’s Southern Chapter in Tacna.

Coach: Blake Rutherford

Right Hand Bat, Medium Pace Bowler: Blake has joined the ranks this year and has been applying his Aussie Sports Technology Degree to good effect. Thorugh his tutelage the Red Caps have become stronger, faster and younger, yes! Younger! The magic serum that he dispenses in training sessions is having phenomenal effects!

Season Opener

Back to basics, the maxim of the beginning of a cricket season, line and length, straight bat, into the wicketkeeper, no silly running, body behind the ball, two hands fielding etc. These are the simple instructions that goes through a cricketers head when he is oiling up his mind and body for the coming months. However it is never that simple, when faced with stifling heat, a dodgy outfield and a body that isn't quite as lithe and reactive as it used to be.
On a day that shall be known as the Viv Ash Cuba Libre opener, twenty five young men turned out to do battle on rapidly degrading outfield through excessive soccer activities. The wicket won't be ready for a couple of weeks yet as it was laid only a month hence. It should be briefly added that twenty five is an impressive stat as the season has opened with just thirteen before and improvisation has been the order of the day. It is good news too as it means games will start on time this season as people will have to arrive early to ensure selection.
So back to the cricket, sunny conditions, Harry and Miles captains, picking two teams from a motley crew, seven unknown quantities, and the four Captains of the Lima League teams considering incentives to attract fresh blood into their teams, that is if these guys could cut the mustard. Harry's team batted first, Chris Abbott back from his International Baccalureate sabatical and Chris Hodgson opening. A rank longhop soon accounted for Chris A playing uppishly to a wide one and being taken by Eids skipper John Bell at midoff. Chris Hodgson was unlucky to be out of his ground when the batsman at the other end drove and the new young 15 year old Indian, Vikram, managed to deflect it onto the stumps. Dave Murphy did not last long though it must be said he was in a muh better condition than a fortnight ago when he had to play in sandals because he had cut his foot, dancing with poles apparently.
The middle order of Ed, Kamlesh and Harry, managed to tick over, adding 17, 43 and 35 respectively, but were never really able to get away. eventually they managed to post a score of 141 in 30 overs. Would it be enough?
After a steak sandwich and a swig of pop, the lads went back out and Jorge and John B were quickly into there strides both hitting useful twenties, though Jorge would have been back in the hutch with scores on zero if the opposition captain had not managed to spill something that could be described as a sitter. But ah, early season bloopers thats all. Miles team managed to accumulate the runs without really having to perform heroics and the scores reached parity with an over to go, the scribe having walloped a four over midon and then contrived to run himself out calling for an insane single. Anis managed to run himself out and it looked like Harry's team would pull off an unlikely tie, but alas it was not to be and Sonu quietly biffed the winning runs over the tightening ring of fielders.
Game over, quick beer in the pub for those without overdue commitments, a sound start to the season, LCFC's One Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary, Great stuff.
Special mention should be made to Ed (17 and 1 for 17 off 6), Matt Spry( 5 and 1 for 22 off 6), Vikram (duck but 2 for 25 off 5), Shane, Anis (18 runout, puffed), Sanjiv, Phil and Matt for all making Debut.
Who's up for it next Sunday? Arrive early to avoid disappointment.

This fierce hot Sunday at the beginning of summer in December the cricketers of Lima aroused themselves from their long winters slumber and shrugged off their Saturday nights and wandered down to Markham college for the third annual ‘cricket veloz’ competition. The same four teams from the previous year, Lima Cricket, Kite Flyers, Eidegenossen, and Chak De, limbered up for battle. A motley crew they were too. This year the teams were a little light. It seems new blood is required for the year ahead. Most teams aside from the Swiss Interest Team were light. On average 9 players showed for each team. In the Lima team, the first girl played in the tournament, in the unlikely guise of Emily Jones. She did not let them down too, it should be added.
First off, Lima cricket were against Eidegenossen, and were never really at the races after being skittled out for 50, only Soulsby M carried his bat, but the rest were about as useful as a Lilo in Afghanistan. The Eids of December were fairly useful in their return and Geraint, the name of a million pronunciations, led a merry charmed life planting the ball over the wall seemingly every other ball. They won in no time at all, except for the waiting for the ball to be returned. For Lima Cricket it was a little like pulling teeth out in slow motion. At the same time Chak De were setting the trend for the day and Kite Flyers were able to post a most handsome target of around 150 (sorry no stats to hand), but it should be quickly added that of this 58 were wides. Chak De were never able to really mount a proper reply and could not make that score, they lost by twenty plus runs.
In the second round, Eidegenossen who played Chak De as a well oiled unit, with Gdman H, Aka loud Welsh git with Panama hat, providing commentary for the hard of hearing in Callao. Chak de were light of their usual arsenal of fast Mumbai Locomotives. It was Prabhu’s last day of cricket in Peru and as honorary captain he was not able to muster the usual grittiness from the team. Maybe it was because the umpires had to be their fro their own team and thus couldn’t justify getting annoyed with them as much as they normally do! Anyway they lost again and the Eids were cock-a-ring, sorry, cock a hoop at the fact they had loads more better players than any other team…..
Quickly onto the other game, sorry if this commentary only really talks about the Lima Cricket in detail, it’s just that the scribe was playing for that team. So after being kicked around like a 8 defenseless cocker spaniel puppies, the skipper decided to inject some Jack Russell into them and they duly delivered. The deciding moment of that game was Ben Jones’ two wickets in one over, including the all important wicket of Bully Buesst, this spurred the growling terriers into worrying the oppo into casi-capitulation, and the last man was caught by Walter J with the score on 108. Lima cricket were fairly hasty in the response, and yet again wides were by far the highest scorers. The tactic of not doing ANYTHING, I MEAN ANYTHING, RASH was instilled in the players mind and as the ball kept flying down leg or way outside off the score slowly climbed. Batsmen were congratulating themselves on 8 run overs where they had contributed, zero of the runs from the bat. The question must be asked now, is this really cricket? From an aesthetic point of view one would have trouble justifying it. A skillful perspective could be asked for, and one would have to say it had a distinctly unskillful perspective. But from a bloody minded win at all costs, it was glorious!
Lima cantered home with four overs to spare and marking up their first victory of the day. Special mention should be made to James Bailey who contributed hugely to wide-aggregation as well as registering his first wicket. “How did you do it”, he was asked? “Oh, its because I was pissed….”, said the perpetual bench warmer.
So, in the final round, it could have been a case of three potential winners, if the Flyers could stop the Megasaurus Eids, and Lima beat Chak De then it would have been down to Harry doing his best twiddling of figures and contriving victory for one of the teams. But it was not to be, the Eids duly delivered, outscoring and outplaying the Flyers, while Lima Cricket dispatched Chak De with the underwiding tactic so successfully employed in the previous match.
All in all, it was a most enjoyable day, the WAGS and children behaved themselves too, Paul should be congratulated for his recent announced engagement, and best wishes to Will Hurtado for his impending marriage down under, plus belated congrats to Harry for his newborn. INDOOR CRICKET UP AND RUNNING!

Like James Caan and his team from the 1975 classic movie, Rollerball, the lads of the PCF have got together for gladiatorial skirmishes prior to the Cricket Veloz tournament in December. There they meet on Wednesday Evening in the dim gloom, as if Markham School had just celebrated Diwali and the smoke still lingering in the air. The lads are there sharpening their spikes, stepping up with the crunching tackles, circling around the witches hat in the coliseum menacingly because the action was about to begin.
Bells Crack Troops were inserted. 18 overs of nonstop mayhem ensued, Bell and Walter S imprinting 44 runs on the walls of the gym. Followed by Kash and Will with more crunching shots and fast action between the wickets. The bowling could have been tighter and catches should have been caught, but the leather underpants Geraint was wearing were chaffing and Jones B had blood in his eyes....
Tony Sanford in diving to save his bin aka wicket took a square metre of paint off the wall. And forever it shall be known as Tony's mark. A suspected broken rib was the result.
In response Walter J's team started well with Dan and Mango Mike batting sensibly putting 40 odd on for the opening partnership. and the young whippersnapper Lachy scored 11. But that was when the wheels fell off the rollerblades and the team disintegrated into ashes and dust and cogs and springs. First Tim fell in valiant battle, followed by Geraint who lashing the ball into the stands was then lynched by the oppo for his efforts. Walter and Jones came spinning into the Colly and desperately tried to stem the heamorraging occurring but it was not enough and Walter's team fell on their swords at the end, handing the victory to the Bellbeaters.
From the ashes the Phoenix shall rise.

Apologies: Rob Champion, Chris Hodgson, Derek Jones, Simon Walter, Hans de Wit. An e-mail was presented from Rob Champion stating that he wished to spend time away from cricket and is resigning his post as Cricket Captain of LCFC and from the PFC committee.

CA presented an agenda which was followed and the following points discussed:

· The minutes from the 2008 AGM were presented which showed an attendance of 13. No matters arose from those minutes.

· CA presented Grant Dugmore, the ICC Americas Development Officer, to the meeting. He talked generally about advances in the financing of world cricket which has increased significantly in recent years. Peru, as an affiliate member, will definitely receive a grant of $15,000 plus $5,000 - $7,500 in January 2009. Peru can also expect to receive around $4,000 for 2008. He will discuss with the new committee the details and development plans that these sums necessitate on Saturday 7 June 2008 at 10:00 am at LCFC.

HH expressed thanks for the considerable help that Grant has shown to Peruvian cricket over the last few years.

· HH gave the captain’s report on Peruvian cricket over the last year, stressing Peru’s impressive debut in an official ICC tournament, in an interesting and progressive season:

§ ICC Division 3 tournament (BA, February 2008)

§ Twenty20 tournament (LCFC, February 2008)

§ Regular season (Lima, January – April 2008)

HH thanked CA for organising the Peruvian team to BA for the ICC competition. He also threw down a gauntlet: for a Markham v Cambridge school cricket match.

HH received the Volunteer of the Year award for Americas cricket in 2007 and was presented with the award by Grant Dugmore.

JW showed off the PCF blog which is growing impressively. It is hoped that the blog will become a website in the near future.

TS gave the Treasurers report. Although the PFC lost money in 2008 the overall account is still in the black to the tune of about $1,000. A full treasurer’s report will be published in the near future. He stressed the need to become affiliated with the IPD (Instituto Peruano de Deportes).

As a committee we have to plan for where we want to be in 10 years time.

How do we fit with the new guidelines of the ICC? – DEADLINE – JULY 2010

PLAYING GUIDELINES

1. Laws of Cricket – No problem

2. Field a senior national team – No problem

3. Senior Competitions

– Minimum of 4 teams now has to be 8 senior teams

– This may be forced by the Peruvian government…

– Not everyone has to play everyone else…. We could have 4 second division teams or we could have 2 teams in Tacna ..and the winner of their ‘tournament’ come up and play the winner of this tournament.

– To start with we only need to have 8 a side games for our second division…

– WE HAVE A COUPLE OF YEARS TO GET TO 8 TEAMS.

– Costa Rica made up a team of GAP students…barbarian sides??

4. ALSO Minimum of 4 Junior teams – find a starting point…BUT HAS TO BE HARD BALL CRICKET…. We will need the smaller junior balls.

– EQUIPMENT – We need to cater for juniors

5. Women’s cricket

– the only stipulation is the including of Girls involved in Junior teams.

– Teams can be mixed up to Under 15.

6. The tri-nations MOU(Memorandum Of Understanding à Chile, Argentina, Brasil) – we really need to join this – This would be a link between the countries as far as activities go…at club level WE SHOULD WRITE A LETTER TO ASK IF WE CAN COME ON BOARD – CAN GRANT SEND US THE AGREEMENT SO WE CAN DRAFT THE LETTER.

7. No stipulation for an U/19 teams for Affiliate teams.

COACHING – we could perhaps get an Argentinean Coach to come over and run a course for PE staff in our schools….in Spanish!! – This would help us to develop junior cricket.

VIV will send around Minutes and also the letter to pass on the changes in the Committee

ADMINISTRATION GUIDELINES

1. We must have appointed at least 1 full time staff after 3 years of Membership

– Perhaps we can only pay them for 6 months (seasonal) – provide accommodation etc

– We could use a GAP student – we could pick someone who is retired and say they are full time administrator. What sort of evidence do we need – we must demonstrate to a rep (like Grant) – It doesn’t say a PAID full time staff member…it could be a volunteer…they just have to be FULL TIME

2. We must have a dedicated office – a house or school….problem with receiving stuff

3. We need an annual operation plan linked to the budget.

GOVERNANCE GUIDELINES

1. WE NEED RECOGNITION BY THE MINISTRY OF SPORT – we need a letter from the ICC – with the Olympic accreditation on the letterhead…. GRANT will get that letter

2. Constitution reviewed annually – we need to have it minuted that it was reviewed. Can Grant send us a generic Constitution to give out to each club….each club should have their own constitutions also.

3. AGM held ….preferable every year..jaja. Elections every year OR perhaps elections every 2-3 years (for Continuity).

4. Legal Status – as soon as we have status with Ministry etc. we should be legal…. Can we have limited liability status…..the LCFC probably has it here on site…but traveling as the Peruvian Cricket team…or when we are developing junior cricket… needs to be thought about

FACILITIES

1. We need a minimum of 2 competition grounds…we have a MAT now so we could be OK with that…. BUT we need to play at least one game on another ground – shouldn’t be a problem.

FINANCE

1. Submit audited (Certified for lower affiliates) annual accounts and summary template within 6 months of financial year end – JANUARY à DECEMBER (financial year) .. ICC funding will come in one lump …and regional funding during the year per quarter. If our AGM is always in June then what can be presented is; 1. the previous financial year 2. spending so far in the current year 3. present the budget for the coming year.

2. MONEY

$15,000 base amount arriving January 2009. How we use it must fit into operational plan.
Annual Capital and Development Grant money depends on our ‘ranking’ (based on performance not just on field) – we will find out in about 5 weeks after the meeting in DUBAI – 24 affiliates wont get additional funding perhaps we will??? Perhaps not….we may sneak into category F (an extra $10,000).
Regional participation grant (project orientated) $5,000 à $7000
$2000 admin grant – we do with it what we like (Cricket nets in Hiram Bingham)….no justification.

Between now and October we need to work out our BUDGET….we should apply…..

Before the 15^th of July we need to make an application for a capital expenditure ($2000) for 2008….

Peru got $9,000 from the ICC last year for eg. ICC tournament, Umpire/coaching course, forum etc

PCF Committee – need to meet VERY soon to make the proposal for the funding (before 15 July). Also to assign roles to committee members.

GRANT can give us a template to make our operational planning – he would like us to plan for not just 2 years …but 4 years…or 5 or 10 years.

There was one email regarding Brasil’s acceptance by ministry of sport.

WE are waiting for a letter from Grant to take to our ministry of sport

We need to get the clubs sorted out with a generic Constitution à CHRIS will write a standard Document and we will send it out to all clubs. We NEED at least one ‘official’ from each club on this committee. We need to perhaps affiliate our teams with already established clubs…such as El Bosque, Flaming Lions – TONY will find out the legalities

Next meeting perhaps in Harry’s Office at San Antonio….closer for everyone.

Accounts – Tony has not yet finished will do it before Chris leaves for the Development Forum…due to the ICC on June 30.

Turnover in the past year will be revealed when Report is published.

Forthcoming events:

1. End of year function at HANS’ House…do we not have it??/ Do we look for another venue?? Do we call a meeting at the LCFC (and no one comes and Committee rolls over???) – the same committee would give us continuity…. One is a social evening and one is a formal Annual meeting…. Could we combine them…Perhaps we could have a formal dinner??? Idea received quite well….have prizes?? Somewhere in Barranco?? Perhaps AGM first – and announce the winners of trophies and then advertise the Dinner…..where trophies are presented…

Once we have a list we can send out an email to the 50 people who have played this season….and announce this..

WE have to follow our constitution – we must have an AGM – we need to agree on a date (not two weeks after the end of the season- as stated in the Constitution)

We could follow the Kiteflyers model – this year charged S/. 150 – S/. 100 is for the dinner…so it is already paid for..

If in JUNE we could do it at Tony’s House… (He is moving in then) – Curry restaurant is an option…curry could be at Tony’s. The Indians will definitely come then!!!

Summary of the 20/20 tourney

Life in Lima continues unabated, the cricket season has reached its climax and everyone can give themselves a big slap on the back if they can reach round after so much cricket in the last three weeks. The second 20/20 Lima Super Sunday Festival came to a close and all manner of cricket was witnessed, to outrageously onesided, ringer infested jamborees to tight than tight finishes with appallingly low scores, countless dropped catches, some excellent fielding and 48 people taking part in what has become an important fixture in the Lima calendar. Over 3 weeekends part time footie players aka the Kiteflyers, the highfalutin Lima Cricket and Football Club, The impeccable Indians and Southern Continent contingency also known as the Boyband "Chak De", and the felt capped cricketers Eidgenossen battled in mortal combat to decide who should be crowned glorious champions. First up were Flyers v Eidgenossen, a good game was played by these two teams, with the Eids having it in the penultimate over when the 1st Eids ringer James from Stroud hammering two maximum's in the penultimate over, ably assisted by Barnesy's custard pies. Up came Lima versus India, so gallant and brave with a young team in transition against the gunslingin 'Chak de'. A target of 115 seemed doable, after Prabhu had carried his bat from opening with a great 73. That was until Atul the Terrible bowled a double hattrick to remove the experimental middle order. With hindsight this over rather defined the tournament for the LCFC and they never really did recover in any of the following games. All out 80 odd. The following weekend Lima played the Flyers and were unable to chase the 120 odd set by Abbot and respective football hooligans, even with the aggressive bowling of the part time spin of Walter forcing the aformentioned off the field with a shiner. Abbot came back when the cruise missile like (not) bowling had abated and laid waste to Lima again. Eids then managed to beat India off the penultimate ball with one wicket left after India had managed to creep to 75, when Buesst had been very mean and efficient in his bowling, and James (cough.......ringer.....another one) hit a maximum off the penultimate ball. There was a minor altercation in the game too, when a semi-stand off took place between 'Chak de' Skip and square leg, but that was resolved by the ICC umps, doing there job well. All in all the umpiring was pretty good, Harry Hildebrand, Rob Champion, Tony Sanford, Miles Buestt, Chris Abbott and John Bell, all played their part in wearing the red t-shirts that made them so distinguishable. Viv Ash John Bell(again) and Julian Walter did the scoring. This could be better as there seems to be a deficiency in this department. Maybe Brandy from Buenos Aires could come to Lima and give us a course in this most important system of historical documentation.
Come the final day the Fellowship team of Eidgenossen needed to beat the underdogs LCFC to claim the trophy that had belonged to the Kiteflyers last year. And so they did, Lima, underfiring underperforming, undercatching, under everything really, skip was under his duvet apparently...... Eids ringed up or should I say rung up 200 runs, a tournament record, with Nick Appleyard making hay and one incredibly long six, clearing the tennis courts on the far side of the club. Stand in skip Walter tried to do his best and had to call on all manner of bowling but to no avail. John, also tucked in to the below par tripe and hit 80 odd (plus his first ever six). Lima's one consolation was being able to creep over 100 in response..... nuff said. India played Kiteflyers and once again Prabhu batted brilliantly for another half century. Atul bowled excellently, both players benefiting enormously from the tour to BA recently. The Flyers were never in the chase of 160 odd and rather tamely surrendered to 'Chak de' after both Harry Hildebrand and Chris Abbott had got out rather cheaply.
Afterwards the players congregated for a delicious bbq, to watch John Bell receive the tournament trophy for Eidegenossen, Atil and Prabhu Bowler and Batsman of the tourney respectively. With Prabhu receiving player of the tournament. His prize....... a pair of smelly flip flops.

Well done everyone, sadly no Easter Internationals took place, mainly because of its earliness (apparently it won't be this early again until 2145) and the recent shenanigans in Argentina, Just two important fixtures on the horizon, Ambo's 11 versus Lima Allstars, plus India-Pakistan versus ROW. Plus the all important end of season barbie a la Dutch at Hans' and Yvonne's.

Latest Cricket world ranking

ICC WCL Americas Division 3

The Americas Division 3 tournament had a stunning climax when three teams could win the tournament before the final ball of the tournament.

The eventual winners were the Turks and Caicos Islands. They enter the ranking table in 59th position.

Second place went to Chile due to their lower net run rate. They remain in 61st position with a gain of 28 points. Belize finished third. They dropped four positions to 70th with a loss of 66 points.

Peru played well in their first ICC tournament and finished fourth. They enter the ranking table in 75th position. Brazil finished fifth, but had a big say in the final tournament result as they inflicted Chile's only defeat. They dropped two places to 82nd with a loss of 8 points.

SUPER SUNDAY

FIRST ROUND OF THE 20/20 COMPETITION PLAYED AT LIMA CRICKET AND FOOTBALL CLUB.

(Not for Lima Cricket…)

The first round of the Second 20/20 tournament at Lima Cricket and Football club took place with two games showing the different ways games can go.

First off were Kiteflyers against Eidgenossen (pronounced Idaguknossen, if that is any clearer, but doesn’t look it). There were some initial selection issues what with the early time of the start of play (11:00am) and the Eid’s skipper turning up at the kick-off time (his idea of punctual hora inglesa) asking the Flyers if they had any spare players, which thankfully they did. Play got underway at 11:25 so it was not that bad. What was impressive was the number of people who had come to the club at such an early hour to help out with the various tasks. Flyers literally got off to one and with the help of Chris Abbott (46), Harry Hildebrand (20 odd) and Gavin Breeze (21 not out) posted 143 in their first innings. Seven an over seemed a daunting task on this pitch that in some areas resembles Farmer Giles turnip patch and it was wondered aloud if the Eid’s had it in them to chase down such a sizeable target. Oh but they did and in spades, thanks in part to a couple of new-arrivals to the fellowship team (Eidegenossen means confederation, so they could be a bunch of hicks too, I suppose), and Miles Buesst (47 not out) guided the team home , assisted by new teacher John Hawkins(31) and James Pulford (12 not out) who finished the game off with 2 big sixes on leg and with one over to go. Fantastic selection procedure award goes to Miles for plucking James out of Tayta, a bar in Miraflores, and selecting him on the young lads blag alone.

In the other game it was a rather different kettle of smelly trout. Lima Cricket excited about the prospect on taking on the Indians and feeling good about themselves, though one front line bowler was missing, were asked to field by the Indian Limenios. The Indians stormed the fortress and were at one point whooping at 45 for none of 5 overs, but the they were corralled in by the accurate bowling of Walter and Sanford to a gettable target of 115. But no one had anticipated the, what can only be described as freakish, over that was bowled by Atul Sharma who collected what should be a treasured double hat-trick, and coupled with Sh@#$ batting and insane running Lima imploded and were literally in more tatters than the Red Ensign on HMS Victory at Trafalgar at 18 for 7. Ok, the ball kept very low and shot through and the batsmen need to consider their feet movement if they want to consider sizeable scores in the future, but hats off to Atul. If it hadn’t been for the steady heads of the Youth Policy selection in Jorge Pancorvo (28) and Tony Sanford (somewhere in the teens) Lima would not have reached a much more respectable score of 84 in reply.

So first blood to Eidgnossen and India this week. Super Super Sunday next week, both the Flyers and Lima Cricket will be looking to make amends when they play each other in the early fixture, so please bring your friends family and motherinlaws plus anyone who has even an inkling of an interest in cricket. Eidgenossen and India will be playing at 2 pm in the clash of the current titans.

After a largely forgetable game fo cricket where the only highlights were Miles' tight bowling and John Bell's 83 not out, and Chris' team won after scoring 201, and the oppo were bowled out for 80...... :-(

O day of days, game of games, bowling of bowling, fielding of fielding, batting of bat…., well let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet…….. here goes the account of the mightiest day in the young life of the Peruvian Redhats to date.

On another beautiful sunny day at the Hurlingham, where Peru had been the day before and were thus more confident of their surroundings, the lads were beginning to look like the cast of Dad’s army, carrying more aches and pains than you’d find at conference for hypochondriacs. Gary had pulled out, his calf (pulled muscle) and foot (manky looking blisters) had forced him to stand aside to allow Peru to present Alejandro Tirado with his first cap for the country and also the first true Peruvian into the team. A fine ceremony at the beginning of the day under the tree of deceptively little shade with Manager Champion presenting Ale (pronounced Alleh) with his cap. Add Ale’s father sister and friend turning up and you had auspicious omen’s for the day. It also meant Vishy had to be 12^th man and Atul Sharma making his way back into the team to replace Gary’s rapier like bowling on the frontline. The writer had a dodgy moment with Javed in the lift, who was walking around like John Wayne after saying he had pulled his groin and that he may not be able to play, and could he replcae him, but was hastily assured that his bowling was going to be rather needed.

So Harry wins the toss and decides to bat and once again Peru were off to a flyer ably assisted by Mr Extra’s. With the score on 21 Chris Abbott got a ball that did a little bit and he was dismissed by a ball ricocheting to first slip off the keeper. Sadly he wasn’t able to repeat his heroics of the day before. Hans came in and played with Harry for the longest partnership of the innings, scratching about like a piglet looking for truffles and none to be found. He was seeing the ball like a peanut apparently, according to Harry, as a pose to a beach ball. Harry was carrying on in his own inimitable manner and was on 37 at the drinks before being undone LBW by a ball that kept straight. Not a happy bunny was our skip, heard muttering to himself, afterwards that he’d not come all the way to Argentina to be given out like that. Second time he’d suffered, dear reader, in two days from apparently substandard umpiring. So Dinesh (10 not out) came on and the fireworks began to explode before going after one roman candle too many and getting a ball in the mouth and a cut like a lunar crater above the lip and in the gum for his troubles. Gazz rushed him off to the hospital to have him repaired hopefully in time to bat again.

The batting kind of went into its shell after this and no one really did anything with the bat unless you call the comedy moment that was Hans calling Atul for an easy single and the languid Indian not moving his ground and with the team yelling at Hans to literally pull Atul out of the crease so the better batsman would not be sacrificed. Atul was having none of it and Hans was the batsman who had to go, run out on 37 and a fine innings it turned out to be. 37 very valuable runs. Ale on debut was not able to put into practice the coaching that Chris had been giving him all week, ‘Play straight lad, play straight’, and was heard to be telling his dad after that he had been shaking so much, due to nerves, that he couldn’t hold the bat properly. So Peru were dismissed for 136 for 9, the first time they were not all out this week, mainly because Dinesh was still at the hospital and arrived just too late to have another bat. Third highest scorer was Mr. Extras on 30.

So 45 minutes before lunch to bowl at the Samba boys, and what a start. Harry had told the boys it was ‘shit or bust’ time. The Redhats were going to have to bowl and field out of their skins. And so they did. In the first over Atul managed to remove the opener for 0 with a ball that was mean and straight, outdoing the bat for pace. Nadeem came on from the other end. He has gone through a mighty transformation this past week. This was a man who was inconsolable on Monday after throwing his wicket away, with a nothing shot, but slowly and surely pulled himself back into contention for Peru’s unofficial man of the tournament. He was asked to bowl fast on a wicket that was doing something. Normally a slow offspin bowler, Nadeem was soon hurling down custard pies and jaffers that were completely unplayable. It took 26 balls before anyone was able to score any runs off him. The incredible bowling continued and soon the other opener was in trouble caught at mid off trying to fend off the speed of Atul. Then the moment of the match came, when Nadeem bowled Feathers (ex-county player) a ball of such venom that lesser mortals would not have been able to get close to it. Feathers managed to tickle it to Prabhu keeping. Atul was able to sucker their number 4 into a false shot with Nadeem making sure he was not going to repeat his ‘school for clowns’ catching of the day before, safely taking it. Brazil going into lunch at 24 for four. After a lovely piece of pulverized flattened meat and chips, (the club lunches not being one of the highlights of the tour) The Redhats could barely eat, driven by the anticipation of what was to follow. Gazz was heard to mutter if we get a quick wicket in the next few overs after lunch then we can do it. Immediately after lunch, second ball Nadeem had their number 6 caught at gully by Hans falling like a Californian Redwood to reach it. . Brazil had anticipated that after Atul (3-34) and Nadeem (3-23)had bowled their spells that there would be little powder left in the bag. How wrong they were. The veterans of the team Tony and Javed came on and spun their magic webs around the dwindling Samba boys who could not produce the rumba required. Tony bowled magnificently, snatching 3-15 and Javed miserly in his own way with handsome looking figures of 4 overs, 3 maidens 1 wicket 1 run……..

And so basically that was that except for the plucky batting of their numbers 7 and 8. Brazil were eventually all out for 73. All the wickets that fell bar one were catches and never is there a greater maxim in cricket than catches win matches. The tide of bad luck turned that day. Brazil is a team who had beaten the second placed team Chile by 34 after scoring 356 runs the previous day and who like Peru had made history the day before by claiming their maiden official ICC victory in the tournament. So congratulations are in order for Brazil for also making history.

We should not detract from the fact that this was a magnificent team performance, Peru to a man stood up and were counted. Rob as manager made sure that drinks and sugar intake and masseuse were all supplied. The scorer, lest we forget him, he did his bit. Recording a proud historical moment such as this is always a fine job for anyone.

Peru we made history. When was the last time Brazil got beaten by Peru at anything??????? Next time Chile, and make sure we celebrate it with our own finest Pisco, not the moonshine, parading as Pisco they were handing out as presents for the other teams. Viva Peru carajo!

Set in the magnificent setting of a 128 year old polo club with marvellous facilities and beautifully kempt turf, a fantastic strip had been prepared for the Peruvian Redhats to do battle once more. And so they did.

Put into field on a muggy and hot day, Peru were soon not putting their plan into action with some cat on a hit tin roof stuff, but Hans removed one opener in the second over.

Dinesh came on and managed to tighten the line considearably but with no luck. Gazza put in sterling stuff with blood dripping from his manky looking blisters, but was also without ladyluck whispering in his ear. Once our spinners came on the story changed completely. Belize suddenly looked like they were swimming in golden syrup, and the wickets began to fall. Both Tony and Javed bowled magnificently, 2-29 and 3-32 respectively. Nadeem (2-29 off 8)came on an bagged a couple himself, but again due to the inexperience of Peru in50 over games, Belize were able to mount a sizeable 223, they scored one fifty and a couple of useful twenties, but they never really put our bowling on the rack. Apart from a couple of dropped catches really, Peru both fielded and bowled excellently.

After a marvelous fish and pumpkin mash lunch, Chris and Harry went into bat and were as confident as teenagers. You wouldn’t have believed the average age of this club is 38. However, the wretched luck that is cursing us on tour raised its head again and Harry was run out, with Peru on 30 odd and running like a train, trying to get back into his crease. It looked mighty close to us on the boundary. Hans came in. Chris and he added useful runs, pushing back the fielding team by running quick singles and being very positive. Hans was eventually caught at long on, in the low teens, trying to push the score on as it became more difficult to score. Sadly Dinesh could not repeat the fireworks of the day before yesterday and was caught just behind square leg for 2. Prabhu was able to score a few decent shots and ably assist Chris who looked like he had his own personal sauna out in the middle. Chris’ batting was an example to us all, never being risky and playing some wonderful strokes. Chris hit seven boundaries and a delightful cover drive comes to mind. Chris was eventually out for 61 caught behind, with the team on 130. Nadeem and Javed put in a couple of cameos, 22 and 29 respectively. Simon and Vishy, not out 10 (on Peruvian debut) also batted for some. However the ask was too much and Peru fell short again by 34 runs. This is against a team that has 14 clubs in its country.

BUT THERE IS A MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT FROM EVERYONE. This tour is doing us a lot of good and we can see where we have to go with greater clarity.

Tomorrow we play Brazil who managed to beat Chile by 22 runs after scoring 359.

God Willing Carajo we are going to win!

Valentine's Day Blues

Members of the Peruvian Cricket team have been seen moping about the hotel lobby, missing their loved ones on this rest day. Tomorrow we shall be girding our loins to take on Belize. Lights out in the dorm at 9. Loooking forward to the whole batting line-up firing tomorrow. We know we can do it, and lets hope we can!

Peru versus Chile 13/02/08, Saint Albans, Buenos Aires Argentina.

Well, what can we say, it was a great game, but we fell just short. After winning the toss, Chirs inserted Chile, Harry arriving with a hammer and saw in hand from the airport just in time. Openers were dispatched for little and generally Chile were in trouble all the way and at one point were 127 for 8 after 42 overs. Buuuuuuuuuut, their number 10 scored 57 off 25 balls and made a target much more difficult. The problem basically lay in lack of experience at 50 over games. Peru began to tire a little.

After the delights (not) of the club canteen, we were immediately in trouble and were staring down the barrel at 5 for 4, yes……. Some very severe fast bowling from the Chileans indeed.

Prabhu and Dinesh then steadied the ship until Prabhu ran himself out. Nadeem and Dinesh ensured we were always in the hunt and were in a better position than Chile were in their innings later on in the game, Both Dinesh and Nadeem put in some lusty blows hitting about 8 sixes between them. The Dinesh was caught just behind square leg for 49. Nadeem smacked 24 in one over and then was bowled for 53. With that fell away the chance we had at 130 for 7, all out for 149.

We played a lot better than we did on Monday in which we were skittled, but not scuttled, for 84. We know on Friday we can improve some more against Belize.

It was a good day for Peru and many players can be proud, especially Nadeem who scored the first official half century for Peru.

Argentinian Tour FEBRUARY 2008 hot hot hot

Please note that the ICC Americas WCLQS Division 3 tournament will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina from the 10th to 17th February 2007

Countries invited to participate are Belize, Turks & Caicos Islands, Chile, Brasil and Peru. The winner of this tournament will be invited to take part in the Division 2 tournament, tentatively scheduled to take place in late March/early April, 2008.

The Division 2 will also include Bahamas, Panama and Suriname.

PERUVIAN CRICKET FEDERATION (PCF)

Meeting: 14 November 2007, 7:40 pm.
Held at Lima Cricket & Football Club (LCFC).

Present: Julian Walter, Tony Sanford, Viv Ash, Rob Champion, John Bell, Harry Hildebrand, Chris Abbott.

The following matters were discussed:

• Cricket Veloz. The rules were discussed and written down by HH who will send them out.
• ICC prizes. ICC (Americas) are offering a number of prizes and it is recommended that we send in some nominations:
- Volunteer of the year – HH
- Lifetime service – VA
- Photograph of the year – one will be looked for
• Kwik Cricket kits. The main order has not arrived but some came with Grant Dugmore and 2 sets were sent to San Silvestre with RC.
• Eligibility. HH has sent a list of Peruvian players with their eligibility to ICC (Americas).
• Website. JW has discussed with Saud Bailey the possibility of creating and operating a website (for $350 + $70 per year). This and other offers will be considered. In the meantime we can use the Blogspot, on http://perucricket.blogspot.com . JW is the blogmonkey.
• Umpìring. TS will run a one day course between the Cricket Veloz and Christmas for those interested.
• 2008 Fixtures. An alternative fixture list was proposed by VA. The original list features Saturday matches and has a league programme based on 40 over matches. The alternative list has all matches on Sundays and a league programme based on 20 over matches. A long debate ensued with strong points made in favour of both lists. In the end the proposal that the alternative list replace the original list was voted on and carried by 4 votes to 3. Therefore the alternative list will be adopted and will be mailed out with these minutes.
• Membership forms. These will be prepared by CA for clubs registered with the PCF.
• Cricket Academy. RC will start an academy for youngsters at LCFC on or around 19 January 2008.
• Earthquake in Chile. There was an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 in northern Chile on 14 November. We should send our commiserations.
• Next meeting. No date was set for the next meeting.

Rules for Cricket Veloz

Inaugural Cricket-Veloz Peruvian championship 2006

Games to be played to the following rules:
• Each game will be of 20 overs per side
• 12 overs will be normal and 8 overs quick pitch
• A quick pitch over must be bowled underarm and must not bounce more than twice.
• A ball considered unfair (beyond the markers on the pitch or above chest height) will be called a wide and count for 2 runs.
• A wide ball will count as a ball (not re-bowled), unless deemed not to be within the spirit of the game.
• Maximum overs bowled per player in a game will be three (2 normal – 1 quick pitch)
• The playing pitch shall measure 22 yards.
• The ball will be a tennis ball wrapped in electricians tape
• No pads will be used by the batsmen
• Each team will have 8 fielders on the pitch at any one time.
• Each player in a team (11 players) must field for a minimum of 5 overs.
• It is the responsibility of the fielding team to complete their 20 overs in 40 minutes.
• Runs may be scored in the following manner
o Hitting targets:
• Behind wall = 0 runs
• Side wall before half way = 1 run
• Side wall after half way = 2 runs
• Back wall on the ground = 4 runs
• Back wall on the full = 6 runs
o Running between wickets:
• One run scored for every length of the pitch run (+ target score).
• If ball goes over the top no additional ‘running between wickets’ runs may be scored only when the ball is played within the ‘cancha’.
• Batsmen must retire with a score of 30. Retired batsmen may return to bat again if the team is dismissed.
• All of the overs will be bowled to one end.
• Batsmen must change ends at the completion of an over.
• Bowlers may not bowl consecutive overs.

The tournament will consist of 6 games. Every team will play every other team.
DRAW:
A toss will decide which Cancha will be used for which game. Captains will toss to decide who will play who on the day

Every team plays every other team. The winning team will be the team with the most points. If teams are level on points the tournament winners will be decided on by Run-rate.
Playing field

The playing area will be approximately the same for each Cancha

Cancha 1 – Coliseo (Dimensions: 40 x 30m)
Cancha 2 – Basketball courts (Dimensions: 43 x 33m)

The wicket will be a large rubbish bin which will make a loud ‘thud’ when hit by the ball. The bowlers end wicket will be a witches hat.

PCF - 2008 Cricket Fixture List

Hot off the press and just in! The new format for cricket next season.
It's just exciting looking at this lads! The new system for the season will be matches both Saturday and Sunday (40 over matches) for the first three weekends with an invitation match versus Tacna on Sunday 10th March.
Then there will be an international tournament over Easter, teams yet to be confirmed. But Most excitingly is the extension of the season, with the NEW Copa de Campeones and other traditional yet mouthwatering gladiatorial skirmishes to finish off the season.
In theory, one could play fifteen matches.......Time to fill your boots chaps.

Miles' Guide to the Cricket Instructors Course

A letter from Miles imparting wisdom and knowledge and impetus regarding the future of cricket and coaching in Lima.

Gentlemen,

In the wake of the recent coaching course at Lima Cricket Club, I thought I would share with you, the Committee, my thoughts and experiences. Whether you like it or not!

The first 2 days were dedicated to an Introduction to Cricket Instructors Course - basically, how to teach other people how to introduce cricket to kids. This is obviously of great importance to us as we have virtually no kids learning how to play cricket at the moment.

What struck me, and is something I know you have tried, is to establish the game within Lima's British schools. This appears to be the only feasible way to establish the game in a meaningful way in Peru, and has cricket in Argentina as a model ... as well as the development of rugby in Lima, as far as I am aware.

Another idea is to bring school kids to Lima Cricket Club for 'away days' of cricket training and matches - a way of making cricket seem 'more important' than other sports (which of course, it is!). On a similar theme, it would be great to establish regular cricket coaching at the Club, on a Saturday morning for example.

On the subject of coaches, a way to attract young cricket enthusiasts might be to offer it on 'voluntourism' websites eg Craigslist.com, Idealist.org etc, whereby we offer a very local experience, and possibly some sort of accommodation and/or pay in return for their coaching. I am sure we could think of a few sweeteners, such as jungle trips, using contacts.

One of the key elements of current ICC policy is to promote the women's game, so it would be to our benefit to bear this in mind when setting up any processes. It would also double our potential base.

The final 4 days were spent doing the West Indies Cricket Board Level 1 Coaching Course, which is designed to be used to coach kids, ostensibly. Having said that, most of us could benefit from the techniques imparted - for example, the leg and off spinning element was a real eye-opener; and I had no idea what the guidelines for gripping the bat were.

Each element of the course was accompanied by a CD-Rom which you are all welcome to have copies of.

On a general note, it would be great to have a website for Peru Cricket. Costa Rica have one (which I can't find on Google) and the webmaster has promised to send the template for us to use. We should also set up a Facebook group ... as well as using any other social network website that we think might be worth it.

That is all I can think of for the time being. I am keen to hear your feedback.

The ICC Level 1 Coaching Course was held in Lima from October 22 to 27 this year and will be followed by a Level 1 Umpiring Course from November 3 to 11. The charms of Lima, including a wonderful and historic club for such events in Lima Cricket & Football Club, good hotels at low prices, rain free weather and a central position in South America make this city an ideal venue for such events.

The second Cricket Veloz, a twenty/20 cricket competition fought out by four clubs, LCFC, the Kiteflyers, the Eidgenossen and the Indians, will take place on November 18 at Markham College, Miraflores.
